The marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis), also known as the marmorkrebs, is an invasive freshwater crayfish species with a unique ability to reproduce via parthenogenesis, meaning all individuals are genetically identical femals capable of rapid population expansion. Although not yet widespread in the UK, it poses a significant ecological threat due to its potential to outcompete native spceies, disrupt ecosystems, and spread diseases such as crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci). Its presence in European water systems highlights the need for vigilant monitoring in the UK.
