The European water vole (Arvicola amphibius), a semi-aquatic rodent native to the UK and much of Europe, is typically found along rivers, streams, and wetlands where it digs burrows into banks. Recognisable by its rounded face, small ears, and furry tail, it feeds mainly on grasses and other vegetation. Once widespread, the species has experienced dramatic declines due to habitat loss and predation by invasive American mink, making it a key focus of UK conservation efforts.
