The demon shrimp (Dikerogammarus haemobaphes) is an invasive freshwater amphipod in the UK, first recorded in 2012. Native to the Ponto-Caspian region, it has spread via waterways and ballast water, establishing populations in rivers and reservoirs. Known for its aggressive behaviour and opportunistic feeding, the demon shrimp outcompetes native invertebrates and disrupts aquatic food webs. Its adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions makes it a significant ecological concern in the UK's freshwater ecosystems.
