Chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans), or Bsal, is an emerging pathogen threatning salamander and newt populations worldwide, including in the UK, where it has raised significant conservation concerns. Unlike it's counterpart Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), Bsal primarily affects urodeles (salamanders and news), causing skin lesions and often fatal chytridiomycosis. While not yet widely reported in the UK, its presence in Europe highlights the potential risk to native species like the great crested enwt (Triturus cristatus), warranting proactive monitoring and mitigation efforts.
